TOEFL Preparation
The 2026 TOEFL iBT is shorter, adaptive, and consists of Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking sections with new task types and updated scoring.
Overview
Starting January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT has been redesigned to be under 2 hours, adaptive, and more relevant to real-world academic and daily situations. The section order is: Reading → Listening → Writing → Speaking. Each section uses a multistage adaptive format, meaning the difficulty of later questions adjusts based on your performance in earlier modules. Scores are reported on a 1–6 band scale (in half points) for each section, with the total score being the average of all sections. The traditional 0–120 score is still provided, and the MyBest score feature continues
Reading Section
- Total Questions: 35–48 across two modules
- Module Structure: Performance in Module 1 determines Module 2 difficulty; you cannot return to Module 1 once Module 2 begins
- Task Types:
- Complete the Words: Fill in missing letters in words within a paragraph
- Read in Daily Life: Short texts (emails, memos, menus) with multiple-choice questions
- Read an Academic Passage: Abridged academic texts with questions on vocabulary, inferences, and paragraph relationships
Listening Section
- Total Questions: 30–40 across two modules
- Task Types:
- Listen and Choose a Response: Select the most natural response to a short prompt
- Conversations: Short dialogues about campus life or student-administration interactions
- Adaptive: Difficulty adjusts based on performance; answers are final once submitted
Writing Section
- Total Time: 23 minutes (reduced from 50 minutes)
- New Task Types:
- Build a Sentence: Arrange scrambled words into a grammatically correct sentence
- Write an Email: Compose a professional email in response to a scenario
- Academic Discussion: Write 100–150 words engaging with a peer discussion
- Scoring: Each task is scored individually, contributing to the section band score
Speaking Section
- Task Types:
- Short responses to prompts about daily life or academic topics
- Simulated discussions or presentations
- Adaptive: Responses are evaluated for fluency, coherence, and accuracy
Key Changes from Previous Format
- Integrated essay tasks removed: Replaced with practical communication tasks
- Shorter test duration: The test is more time-efficient with adaptive question difficulty
- New scoring system: 1–6 banded scores are provided for each section
- Focus on real-life and academic English: Includes campus scenarios and everyday communication
